DALI vs. Francis Scott Bridge (IV)

Dali remains where it collided with/destroyed (etc.) the bridge on Tuesday 26 March (19 days so far; it’s going to be a LOT longer).

Thankful as usual for much wisdom from The Loadstar on what, how, whom:

NB. learning:

  • Baltimore isn’t the biggest port on the east coast, but it’s the only one deep enough to handle any vessel
  • Bridge “legs” apparently lacked the reinforcement that a similar bridge (at least completed around the same time) near Felixstowe has
  • Sea/bay bed is some kind of not friendly mud that basically swallows much of what falls into it (much of the bridge, due to lack of said “leg” reinforcement)
  • Waterway cannot be opened for other vessels until ALL debris is removed
  • Rebuild estimated to cost $2B+
  • After declaring General Average, ship owner committed to a payout of max $40M. Ship is apparently valued at $90M.
