Icon of the Seas – a distraction of cruise ships

2024 proceeds in the predictable vein of the end of 2023, with at least two wars (Israel-Gaza; Russia-Ukraine) occupying the sometimes conflicting narratives of the BBC, CNN, and Al Jazeera. (Sudan et al. get less airtime, being older. Just too ongoing for anyone to care anymore?)

ALSO, how the cruise ship industry apparently flourishes while the rest of the global shipping world goes to shit.

To whit, Icon of the Seas sets sail on its maiden voyage:

Environmentalists are not happy with the cover story of “all LNG”, “environmentally friendly” tagged onto a floating kitschery that has to dispose of the processed buffets of almost 10,000 people every day. (They don’t store it.)

Still, it’s got a 17m waterfall, 6 water slides, and 7 pools (“one for each day of the week”). And more than 3 dozen places to feed and drink.

And it was christened by Lionel Messi.

Reading about this on Dr.dk, I today learned that the Danish word for spectacle is “tilløbsstykke”:

An attraction, or distraction?

The people still alive in Gaza must be thrilled.
